Music - 50th Anniversary of the Music of the Avsenik Brothers

50th Anniversary of the Music of the Avsenik Brothers
The beginnings of the music of the Avsenik brothers go back to 1953 when Slavko Avsenik formed a trio in Ljubljana. In 1955 the trio became a quartet ("Gorenjski kvartet") and soon after a quintet ("Kvintet Bratov Avsenik"). Together with his brother Vilko, Slavko created a new original sound of ethnic musical expression based on traditional Slovenian folk music. The Avsenik's success story began when Fred Rauch, the musical editor of Bavarian Radio, received some Avsenik recordings from Ljubo Hartman, the then editor of the musical radio show called "Slovenian Hour". Together they dubbed the band as the "Oberkrainer". Soon after the band began appearing on radio and television, performed on concerts and signed a ten-year recording contract with the German Telefunken Recording Company. The group has earned 31 Gold, 2 Diamond and 1 Platinum Record. They won countless awards, including recording industry's "European Oscar" for their original music upon the release of their "Golden Sounds" double record. For four decades the Avsenik Band was Slovenia's ambassador around the world. Slavko Avsenik's creative music talent combined with his brother's excellent arrangements were a driving force behind the success of the band. Together with the excellent musicians, singers, Slovene and foreign text writers they have created original Oberkrainer sound that has been widely imitated by numerous other bands in Europe.

Brigita Avsenik
