Animals of Slovenia-Threatened types of fresh water fish (Velika senčica - brez repa)

VELIKA SENCICA, UMBRA KRAMERI (WALBAUM,1792)
The Velika sencica belongs to the family of sencic and is the only representative of its family in Europe. It was fist found in Slovenia in 1980 in a blind river branch on the left bank of the river Mura, down from Ljutomer. This is its only living space in Slovenia. On an average this fish is between 6 and 9 cm, and at a maximum of 11 cm.
It feeds on animal plankton and river bed invertebrae. It spawns in the spring between March and May, laying its spawn on aquatic plants.
It is being threatened by amelioration, pollution and the filling up of blind river branches.
