Animals of Slovenia-Threatened types of fresh water fish (Ogrica - brez repa)

OGRICA, VIMBA VIMBA CARINATA( PALLAS, 1811)
The ogrica falls into the carp family and is among one of the threatened fresh water fish in Slovenia. It is interesting for angling. It grows to a length of 30 to 50 cm and weighs up to 1 kilo. This fish has a high, convexed flat body. It is recognisable by its projected mouth, characteristic blunt " nose " and mouth on the under side of its head.
This fish feeds on invertebrates which it finds on the riverbed. It spawns in June and July in areas where there is a gravel river-bed with a strong flowing current and not too deep water.
In Slovenia this fish lives in the flowing waters of the Danube basin ( Drava, Sava and Mura tributaries ).
