Animals of Slovenia-Threatened types of fresh water fish (Upiravec - brez repa)

UPIRAVEC, ZINGEL STREBER STREBER(SIEBOLD, 1863)
The Upiravec is a small representative from the family of real fresh water perch. It grows on an average between 14 to 18 cm., but can reach 22 cm. It has a long spindle-like and very rough body. It is a fish that lives on the river bed, and has a characteristic flat body with its mouth on the under part of its head.
It only lives in the Danube river basin, in Slovenia it lives in the Sava, Kolpe and Krke river basins. It populates shallow parts of flowing water with sand or gravel beds and a fast current.
It feeds on river bed invertebrae. It spawns in the summer on a stoney river bed in strong jets of water.
